QR Codes
A lot of things use QR Codes over here, after all this particular barcode is a Japanese invention. It was invented by Denso, a auto parts company owned by a Toyota. The Japanese stamp in my passport even has a QR code on it, actually it's a sticker rather than a stamp, with further details encoded into the QR code. Boarding passes and even the Okinawa monorail tickets have QR Codes so you can use the paper ticket exactly like a smart card by just tap and go.
